Open canoe's are the canadian traditional canoe, developed by the Indians to transport goods down Canada's rivers to sell to the western world. Earlier designs were wooden strip canoes and birchbark canoes ( as seen on Ray Mear's BBC programme)

Modern boats are made from a light weight sandwich of plastics and foams, making them extremely strong and light for a large boat.
